LIFE SERVICE AWARD - ENA VERHOEVEN

While John was the name on paper and the face at meetings in the Treasurer position since the early 90s (nearly 40 years), it was Ena who did all the banking, balancing of accounts, and ensuring drivers received their money. Up until recently, this meant physically obtaining cash and getting it to the right people; now it involves managing bank transfers.

For nearly 30 years, she organised accommodation at Lazy River, Swan Hill, including dealing with the problems with rainouts, right up until the recent change of ownership. She ensured drivers had accommodation with ample parking, which helped create the strong community atmosphere that became a hallmark of those weekends. She also arranged bookings at Murray Downs, Swan Hill, for the pre race night class catch up, including coordinating transport on their courtesy bus. In addition, she organised food for BBQ lunches and, later, BBQ breakfasts at the Motel on Race morning.

Over the years, she has organised many Super Rod presentation dinners, from sourcing venues and caterers to managing bookings to ensure tables work out, taking payments at the door, organising raffles and prizes, arranging trophies, and countless other tasks that often go unseen.

She has spent many hours printing, folding, and mailing newsletters, as well as proofreading content and checking race reports.

She is also the keeper of the class's history. She has maintained scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings, programs, and many of the early Super Rod photographs. (although has less of the recent years as was not always possible or financially viable. She always made a point of obtaining a photo of every car that raced throughout the season in the earlier years).

Much of what she does happens behind the scenes, and many people don't see the countless hours she has contributed. For as long as John has been Treasurer, Ena has effectively been the Treasurer as well. With this being a surprise to Ena last night we weren't able to discretely obtain the actual years of service without her catching on to getting this award last night. She was also awarded the President’s award in 2010.
