Tiny microbes. Big environmental impact.
Monash University researchers have revealed that microscopic organisms are actively breaking down decades-old uranium mining waste in South Australia's Flinders Ranges.
Rather than remaining safely locked inside stable minerals, radioactive and toxic metals can be transformed into tiny nanoparticles capable of moving through soil and water.
The collaborative research with CSIRO and the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary not only changes how we understand legacy mine sites but could also help develop cleaner mining technologies and new ways to remediate contaminated land. The research team included Professor JoΓ«l Brugger and Dr Santonu Sanyal.
