And just like that, the Murray-Darling Basin Leadership Program (MDBLP) is underway.

This week, Cohort 1 came together for their first session, the beginning of a journey that will connect them with the people, places and challenges of the Basin. Over the coming months they will build the skills, networks and confidence to lead change in their communities and across the region.

There is something special about a first session. New faces, big questions and the start of connections that tend to last well beyond the program.

Applications are now open for Milparanga Emerging Leadership Program 2026.

Milparanga Emerging is an intensive six-day leadership program for emerging First Nations leaders across rural, regional and remote Australia.

Designed and delivered by First Nations facilitators for First Nations people, the program creates a culturally safe and challenging space to strengthen leadership, build connections and explore how you can make a difference in your community.

The program is open to First Nations people aged 21 and older who:
- are stepping into leadership or want to take on future leadership roles
- are passionate about creating positive change in their community
- want to strengthen their confidence and leadership capability
- are ready to connect with and learn alongside other First Nations leaders.
