At one point in history, the world’s greatest tightrope artist, dubbed the ‘The Wizard of the Wire’, was an Aussie from Lismore.
Discover the story of Con Colleano in our NAIDOC Week screening of The Colleano Heart on 5 July. This special event includes a Q&A with filmmaker and NFSA Head of First Nations Engagement Pauline Clague.
From 1925 to the late 1930s, Colleano was headliner at the largest travelling circus in America, the Ringling Bros & Barnum and Bailey Circus, which served as inspiration behind ‘The Greatest Showman’. Colleano wowed audiences with dazzling somersaults and his charming Spanish toreador persona (in reality, Colleano had Aboriginal, Irish and West Indian roots).
A rare collection of home videos, digitally preserved by the NFSA, captures the man behind the showman. In this clip, Colleano casually shows off his toreador skills and cosies up to his wife, vaudeville soubrette Winnie. Fellow circus folk and family members flock in front of the camera and strike a pose. Playful intimacies are captured by celluloid, revealing the down-to-earth camaraderie of circus life, which may be surprising from these larger-than-life performers.
Don't miss this one-off special event, presented by NITV.
