Studying aromatherapy quietly changed how I use oils at home — and there are three things you’ll now never catch me doing. 🌿

1. Using them neat on my skin. Essential oils are powerful little things, and going undiluted is the quickest route to irritation or long-term sensitivity. I always blend a few drops into a carrier first — fractionated coconut or jojoba are my go-tos.

2. Swallowing them. Whatever you might’ve seen online, essential oils aren’t meant to be taken internally — that’s a firm no without proper, qualified one-on-one guidance. Mine stay for diffusing and diluted on skin.

3. Wearing citrus oils out in the sun. So many citrus oils — bergamot, lemon, lime — are phototoxic, meaning sun exposure soon after applying can leave you with burns or dark patches. I save those for evenings, or keep that skin well covered.None of this is about fear — it’s about getting the simple stuff right, so oils stay the lovely everyday ritual they’re meant to be.

Save this, and send it to a friend who’s just getting into oils 🌿

Here’s the part we didn’t have time for in the video 🐾

The reason cats react so differently? They’re missing a liver enzyme that helps the rest of us break these compounds down — so what clears easily from your system can quietly build up in theirs. Add in all that grooming (oil settles on the fur, then gets licked straight off) and you can see why our little cats need the most care of all.

So when you diffuse:
– Keep it diluted, always
– Short bursts only — think 20–30 minutes, not all day
– Crack a window and leave the door open so they can wander off
– Keep your bottles up and out of curious paws’ reach
– Never go neat onto their fur or skin

Gentler to reach for first (diluted, and worth a quick word with your vet):
Lavender, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood

Best left in the cupboard around pets — especially cats:
Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Pine, Cinnamon, Clove, Citrus, Ylang Ylang, Pennyroyal

Share your home with birds? Their little lungs are incredibly delicate, so it’s safest not to diffuse around them at all.
And if you ever notice drooling, wobbliness or low energy once the oils are out, trust your gut and call your vet.

Save this one — your future self (and your fur baby) will thank you 🐾
