They’re back.

The first humpback whales of the season have begun arriving off the Broome coast, marking the start of one of the greatest migrations on Earth.

Over the coming months, thousands of humpback whales will travel more than 6,000 kilometres from the icy feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warm tropical waters of the Kimberley. For many, this is where the next generation begins. Mothers give birth, calves take their first breaths and bulls compete for the attention of females in a journey that has been repeated for countless generations.

The Kimberley is home to one of the largest humpback whale nursery areas in the Southern Hemisphere, and Broome sits right on the edge of this remarkable annual highway.

Over the next few months, keep an eye on the horizon.

A distant splash may become a breaching whale.

A small black shape may become a mother and calf travelling side by side.

And if you’re lucky, you might hear the unmistakable gasp of a whale surfacing before disappearing once more into the vast Indian Ocean.

Every year they come.

Every year they leave.

And every year they remind us that Broome sits beside one of nature’s great wonders.

The Staircase to the Moon returns to Broome this July.

For three nights only, the rising full moon reflects across the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay, creating the famous optical illusion that appears as a staircase stretching from the horizon to the moon itself.

Wednesday 1 July - 6:32pm
Thursday 2 July - 7:35pm
Friday 3 July - 8:18pm

It’s one of those uniquely Broome experiences that never quite looks the same twice. The colours change, the tides change, the moonrise changes, and yet every appearance feels just as magical as the last.

Add in 30°C days, cool 14°C mornings, balmy evenings and a calendar full of events, and July is shaping up to be everything we love about the dry season.

If you’re in Broome, don’t miss it.

If you’re not, what are you waiting for? Get involved.

It’s Broometime, people.
