Native Animal Rescue: Broome

Happy outcome for baby Tawny Frogmouth: Most people want to help a baby bird found on the ground, but we need to stand back and take in all the circumstances and if in doubt, call a wildlife rehabilitator and get advice. The Tawny Frogmouth in the previous post was feathered, could stand and perch and was learning to fly. Ten days after it came in to care it was returned to the location it was found where its worried parents were waiting. Two days later, they were all spotted in a gum tree next to the one that was damaged in the storm. Thank you to Tessa Beechley and Paul Noble for making this possible and helping us avoid human imprinting on the baby bird. Remember the parents will always be nearby and if the baby is feathered, maybe you could put it on a branch off the ground and let the parents do their job or if it's smaller, maybe you could put a makeshift nest in the tree, so parent birds can still feed and care for their growing baby. It should be a last resort to remove them from their home and parents. We welcome your call if you need advice.
