A MORNING WITH HIS EMINENCE
After the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Cathedral of Saint Sophia this Pentecost Sunday, my wife Ying and I were deeply honoured to be hosted by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia for morning tea at the Archdiocese in Sydney.
To share that time with His Eminence on such a sacred day was a privilege I will carry with me for a long time. His warmth, his depth of faith, and his genuine love for Hellenism and Orthodoxy are immediately evident the moment you are in his presence. Despite a schedule that would humble most, he gave us his time generously and wholeheartedly, and for that, Ying and I are truly grateful.
His Eminence also graciously took us on a personal guided tour of the Cathedral at Redfern, the spiritual and administrative heart of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. To walk through that cathedral with the Archbishop himself as your guide is an experience that transcends words. The architecture, the iconography, the sacred atmosphere of that space, it is a living testament to the enduring presence of our Orthodox faith on this continent. Every stone, every icon, every detail speaks of a community that has carried the light of Byzantium to the other side of the world and refused to let it dim.
We left inspired.
I came to Sydney this weekend first and foremost as a Greek Orthodox Christian, as a husband, as a father, and as a proud son of this faith. To have been received with such grace and hospitality by the shepherd of our Church in Australia is a blessing I do not take lightly.
Thank you, Your Eminence. Your leadership, your vision, and your profound humanity are a beacon for our community. May God grant you many years of health, strength, and wisdom as you continue to guide us.
Χρόνια Πολλά.

✨ Two Homelands, One Heart: A Night to Remember ✨
On Friday evening in Sydney, the Honorary Consulate-General of Greece in Queensland was proud to celebrate a truly extraordinary occasion. The Hellenic Initiative Australia hosted a special reception and exhibition for Caroline Rovithi, a gifted visual artist visiting from Greece whose touring exhibition, Two Homelands, One Heart, has inspired audiences nationwide.
As a Director on the Board of THI Australia, Honorary Consul-General George Mastrocostas delivered the keynote address, reflecting deeply on the bond of the diaspora:
“We are proudly Australian. We are deeply Greek. We do not live with a divided heart. We live with an enlarged one. We have been blessed with two homelands, but one soul.”
We were delighted to share the evening with a distinguished gathering, including the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Mr. Giorgos Skemperis; THI Australia President, Mr. George Kailis; and Mr. Paul Nicolaou (Business Sydney).
The Greek story is an integral part of the Australian story itself. Evenings like this ensure it continues to be told with pride, passion, and purpose. 🇦🇺🇬🇷

🏛️ A CENTURY IN THE MAKING: Pentecost Sunday at Saint Sophia Cathedral 🕊️
This morning, Honorary Consul-General George Mastrocostas and his family had the profound privilege of attending the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Paddington, Sydney. To be present as His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia officiated on its patronal feast day was a moment of deep spiritual grace.
The Cathedral of Saint Sophia holds a monumental place in our history. Built between 1926 and 1930, it stands as the first Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the Southern Hemisphere, serving as the spiritual heart for generations of Greek immigrants.
This year marks 100 years since its foundation stone was laid. Standing within those heritage-listed walls on Pentecost Sunday is a humbling reminder of the faith, sacrifice, and vision of our early Greek-Australian pioneers who built a home for the soul in a new land.
Χρόνια Πολλά to the parish family of Saint Sophia. May the Holy Spirit continue to illuminate and guide this sacred community for the next century and beyond. 🇬🇷🇦🇺

DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION
Diplomacy Belongs to All Sides of the Chamber
True diplomacy rises above politics, and the final official engagement of His Excellency Ambassador Stavros Venizelos visit to the Queensland Parliament was a fine example of that principle.
Honorary Consul-General of Greece in Queensland, Mr George Mastrocostas, accompanied the Ambassador as he was warmly received by The Honourable Cameron Dick MP, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, in a meeting that spoke to the bipartisan respect for Greece and the importance of the bilateral relationship.
The Greek Australian community is proud to count friends on both sides of the political aisle, and the warmth and generosity shown throughout this historic visit is deeply appreciated.
