Imagine being 85, in pain after a fall - and being sent to hospital just for an X-ray. 😔

Ambulances. Emergency departments. Long waits. Stressful environments.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

A recent Australian study published in BMC Nursing looked at how mobile X-ray services can support residents in aged care - by bringing imaging to the facility instead of sending residents to hospital.

Here’s what the research found:

The benefits of mobile X-rays:
✨ Fewer unnecessary hospital trips
✨ Less stress and disruption for residents
✨ Faster diagnosis and treatment
✨ Reduced pressure on hospitals and paramedics

So what’s the problem?
The study found that nurses - who know residents best - often face delays and barriers when trying to organise imaging, especially after hours. Despite having strong clinical judgement, they’re limited by approval processes and system constraints.

At Modia Health, we see firsthand how mobile diagnostic services can make aged care more comfortable, efficient, and person-centred when the right systems are in place.

As Australia’s aged care population continues to grow, we need care models that prioritise dignity, comfort, and timely access to services - without unnecessary hospital transfers.

Margaret needed a chest X-ray.

She came back with a skin tear, deeply confused, and wouldn't eat for three days. The X-ray was clear - but the five manual transfers it took to get that answer had done real damage.

Every hospital transfer is a gamble. 5-8 manual handling events minimum, each performed by staff who don't know your resident.

The research is clear:

- 70%+ of nursing injuries come from manual handling
- 38% of hospitalised aged care residents develop delirium
- 55% of ED transfers are considered avoidable

What if the imaging came to them instead?

Mobile X-ray eliminates the transfer cascade entirely. Zero lifts. Your staff. Their room. Fast results.

From Call to Diagnosis in 3 Hours: How Mobile Imaging Transforms Aged Care

Last week, we received a call at 11 AM from a nurse at a Brisbane aged care facility. A resident was in severe pain - significant bruising on his right arm, unable to move it. She needed answers. Fast.

Here's what happened:

Within 1 hour - our ultrasound technician was on site
Within 2 hours - X-ray technician arrived (the GP requested additional imaging during the ultrasound)
Within 4 hours - full diagnostic report delivered to the GP and RACF.

The findings: fractured elbow, hematoma, complex shoulder collection, no DVT.

The GP had everything needed to make immediate clinical decisions. Treatment started the same day.

Without mobile imaging? This resident would have faced:
• Hours waiting for an ambulance
• Hours in ED triage
• Hours waiting for imaging slots
• A 24+ hour ordeal, minimum

Instead, he stayed in his room. His friend stayed by his side. He received answers in hours, not days.

This is what's possible when aged care teams know mobile imaging is available - and when they make that call instead of defaulting to hospital transfer.

To every nurse, carer, and clinical coordinator in aged care: you have more power to change outcomes than you realise.

"Everything is coming to him. And I can be here to look after him."

Those words from a resident's friend stay with me.

Her friend had a suspected fracture - significant pain, couldn't move his arm. The traditional pathway would have meant:

• Hours waiting for an ambulance
• More hours in ED triage
• An unfamiliar, chaotic environment
• A 24+ hour ordeal minimum

Instead, we brought the X-ray and ultrasound to him on the same day. In his room. With his friend holding his hand.

Fracture confirmed. DVT ruled out. Treatment started immediately.

This isn't about convenience. It's about understanding what hospital transfers actually cost our most vulnerable patients:

• 38% develop delirium
• 5.4× increased dementia risk with delirium
• 30% experience lasting functional decline

Every transfer decision deserves this question: Is the hospital the only option?

Often, it isn't.

Up to 38% of aged care residents develop delirium during hospital admission.

That's not a typo. It's a systematic review finding that should change how we think about transfer decisions.

When a resident is sent to hospital for an X-ray to rule out a fracture, there is a careful balance to be walked. Research tells a worrisome story:

• 38% develop delirium in hospital
• 19% develop pressure ulcers
• Up to 34% die during admission
• 36% still have delirium symptoms at discharge

For residents with dementia, delirium increases mortality risk by 5.4 times.

The question isn't whether hospital care is good - it's whether every transfer is necessary.

Modia Health offers an alternative: fast and easy X-rays and ultrasounds delivered at the bedside, keeping residents in familiar environments with trusted staff.

For aged care residents using mobility aids like the Sara Stedy, travelling to a clinic for an X-ray or ultrasound can be stressful and risky, and ambulance transfers are often not the best solution.

In fact, many clinics won’t accept bookings for these high-needs patients. This often leaves families and facilities with no option but to arrange ambulance transfers to hospital. Even then, care can be challenging. Hospital environments are unfamiliar, staff may be unaware of a resident’s mobility limitations, and transferring onto hospital beds can be difficult and unsafe.
