Queensland Roundtable – Driving Change: Better Health for People with Intellectual Disability.

Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) in partnership with the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, and the Qld Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability and Autism Health (QCEIDAH), brought together people with intellectual disability, families, and key decision makers, as well as experts and professionals from health, disability, and advocacy organisations.

We shared what is happening now in Queensland across health and disability and discussed what has changed since the release of the Disability Royal Commission and the National Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Intellectual Disability.

It is rare to have so many likeminded people together in one room, all focused on better outcomes for people with intellectual disability.

Special thank you to all our amazing speakers, presenters, panelists and attendees for sharing your views and experiences on this important topic. We will be putting together a summary that will be shared and it will have all the key actions identified.

Following are some photos from this great event:

Michelle was the first witness to receive questions from Committee Chair, Labor Senator Karen Grogan, as well as Greens Senator, Jordon Steele-John, Liberal Senator Wendy Askew and Labor Senator Michelle Ananda-Rajah.

Michelle spoke about the key points of QDN’s submission including:
- amending the Bill to ensure safeguards for people with disability.
- retain whole of assessment principles
- address concerns about the increased ministerial powers and loss of co-governance with states and territories

Accessible homes don’t just benefit people with disability; they also support ageing Australians, families, and future tenants and buyers.

Small Changes, Big Difference is a campaign which provides clear guidance on how accessibility modifications can be requested and installed in private rentals, and how property owners can adopt best practice.

You can check out the campaign and even share the materials yourself at this link: https://qdn.org.au/home-mods/

This is how property owners, investors, and property managers can play a critical role in making rental housing more accessible, inclusive, and respectful.

Developed by Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) in collaboration with people with lived experience of disability, The REIQ, industry representatives, the Department of Housing and Public Works (DHPW), and other key industry peak bodies, the campaign promotes consistent and accurate guidance across the sector.
