Why teach colour & shape?

Colour and shape are recognisable characteristics that we use to define and organise the world around us. When we look at an object our minds are instantly recognising its colour and shape in order to know what it is. Colour is one of the first words a child will use to describe things.

Understanding colours and shapes is necessary for the learning of many other curriculum areas, from maths and science to language and reading. A preschooler who is able to tell the difference between shapes is better equipped to notice the differences in the shape of letters and numbers.

When your child plays, they use sorting and classifying skills to observe similarities and differences of colour and shape, make comparisons, and organise visual information in order to make sense of the world. (e.g. things that are round are better for rolling).

Pretty important learning to be done!
