Sri Lanka has etched its name into the history books of international dance as Tarja De Silva and Gihan Umesh secured a landmark championship victory at the 100th Anniversary Blackpool Dance Festival, held at the iconic Winter Gardens in Blackpool, United Kingdom.

Widely regarded as the pinnacle of competitive ballroom and Latin dance, the Blackpool Dance Festival is often referred to as the "Olympics of Latin Dance." For over a century, it has brought together the world's finest dancers to compete at the highest level of excellence, making it one of the most respected and prestigious dance events globally.

The Latin competition features five disciplines: Cha-Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive, with competitors judged on technical precision, musicality, artistry, partnership, and overall performance. Each year, more than one hundred of the world's leading dance couples compete for the coveted Blackpool titles, making every victory an extraordinary accomplishment.

Against this elite international field, Tarja De Silva and Gihan Umesh delivered a remarkable performance in the highly competitive Professional-Amateur (Pro-Am) category, becoming the first Sri Lankan dance couple in history to compete at the Blackpool Dance Festival Pro-Am division and, more significantly, the first Sri Lankans ever to win championship honours at the festival.

Their victory marks a defining moment not only for the two dancers but also for Sri Lanka's performing arts community, demonstrating that Sri Lankan talent can compete alongside, and triumph over, the very best in the world.

Tarja De Silva is an internationally acclaimed professional Latin dancer, performer, and respected dance educator based in the United Kingdom. She is the Founder of Colombo Dance Studio in London and teaches at the renowned Pineapple Dance Studios. Beyond her achievements in dance, she is also an accomplished fashion designer, holding a Master's Degree in Fashion Design.

Her dance partner, Gihan Umesh, is one of Sri Lanka's leading dance champions, choreographers, and performers. He serves as Principal Dancer and Co-Choreographer of Muddrika Dance Studio and is the Co-Founder of KG Twins School of Dance. In addition to his accomplishments in dance, he is a professional fitness trainer and was crowned First Runner-Up at Mr. Sri Lanka 2025 for the Mr. Global competition.

This historic accomplishment was made possible through the collaboration between Muddrika Dance Studio, Sri Lanka, and Colombo Dance Studio, United Kingdom. The partnership brought together international expertise, shared vision, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, culminating in a milestone that has elevated Sri Lanka's presence on the global dance stage.

More than a personal triumph, this achievement represents a breakthrough for Sri Lankan dance as a whole. It demonstrates that with dedication, world-class training, and international collaboration, Sri Lankan dancers can successfully compete at the highest levels of global competition.

Their success is expected to inspire a new generation of dancers across the country, encouraging young performers to pursue excellence and aspire to international stages that once seemed beyond reach.

Tiana Sumanasekera, the Sri Lankan-American whose Bollywood style gymnastics moves at a US women’s gymnastics regional championship went viral on social media, has decided to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympics.

The first time she walked into a gymnastics gym as a young girl, something clicked. The balance beam, the uneven bars, the exhilaration of soaring through the air—it wasn't just another after-school activity. It was where she discovered a passion that would shape her life.

That passion demanded years of sacrifice, perseverance, and resilience. Every early morning practice, every fall followed by another attempt, and every moment of self-belief led her closer to wearing one of the most recognizable uniforms in world sport.

For the past five years, Tiana proudly represented Team USA, one of the most competitive gymnastics programs on the planet. It was an experience she describes as both an honor and a privilege, filled with memories that will remain with her forever. Competing alongside some of the world's best athletes pushed her to new heights and opened doors she had once only dreamed of.

Yet, as her gymnastics career continued to evolve, so too did her understanding of who she was beyond the competition floor.

Born and raised in the United States, Tiana has always carried another identity just as proudly—her Sri Lankan heritage. It is woven into her family, her traditions, and the values that have guided her throughout her life.

Now, she has chosen to embrace that heritage in the most meaningful way possible.

Tiana has announced that she will represent Sri Lanka in international gymnastics, a decision rooted not only in ambition but also in purpose.

For many athletes, competing at the Olympic Games is the pinnacle of a lifetime of dedication. For Tiana, the possibility of walking into an Olympic arena carrying the Sri Lankan flag would mean something even greater. It would be a celebration of family, identity, and belonging.

It would also be an opportunity to inspire.

Gymnastics remains a developing sport across Sri Lanka and much of South Asia. Unlike nations with long-established gymnastics traditions, young athletes in the region often have fewer resources, facilities, and opportunities to pursue the sport at the highest level.

By representing Sri Lanka, Tiana hopes to become more than a competitor. She hopes to become a role model for young gymnasts who have rarely seen someone with a similar background performing on the world's biggest stages.

Representation matters. Sometimes, seeing someone who shares your heritage is enough to convince a child that their own dreams are possible.

Tiana hopes her journey can help shine a spotlight on gymnastics in Sri Lanka while encouraging greater investment and participation in the sport across South Asia.

Her decision is not about leaving one country behind for another. Instead, it reflects the reality experienced by many children of immigrant families—where identity is not divided but shared.

As a proud Sri Lankan American, she carries both nations with her.

One gave her the opportunity to discover and develop her talent. The other gave her a heritage that has always been close to her heart.

Now, those two worlds come together as she embarks on the next chapter of her remarkable journey.

For Tiana Sumanasekera, the destination has always been excellence. The flag she carries may be changing, but the passion that first inspired her as a little girl remains exactly the same.

And perhaps, somewhere in Sri Lanka, another young gymnast will watch her compete and realize that impossible dreams can become reality.
