G’day!

Bush foods are all around us. If you take a walk through your local national park or even through local remnant vegetation, you’ll find them growing wild everywhere. The idea is that you can have these in your home garden as well, just like your very own bush food supermarket.

Here are a few that you can pick up at your local native nursery this weekend:

1. Pig Face (Carpobrotus rossii) — a stunning native succulent, sautéed, stir-fried, or paired with steak.
2. Lemon-scented Grass (Cymbopogon ambiguus) — beautiful steeped in tea, great in marinades too.
3. Ruby Saltbush (Enchylaena tomentosa) — tiny red and orange berries, sweet and salty at once. An absolute classic.
4. Bush Banana (Leichhardtia australis) — a bit trickier to find, arid-loving and genuinely beautiful. Worth the search.

Go for it, get them in the ground, and enjoy growing your own native garden — you’ll be supporting local biodiversity and building a healthier ecology right in your backyard.
