This is the Bishops Palace, it was the home of The Prince Bishops. They were powerful and amassed great wealth from taxing the people of the North even waging war on others to increase power and wealth. They became subject to the monarchy in the 18 hundreds and lost any right to amass armies or collect taxes. The Bishops of Durham were third in line to the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Last Bishop to hold the position Archbishop of Canterbury was The bishop Michael Ramsey. It is now a tourist attraction and has a Faith Museum and you can tour the castle residence. A very interesting place to visit as I worked there as an apprentice rebuilding the roof stonework and turrets in the Seventies.
