As a veterinarian, there are few moments more profound than being present when a beloved pet takes their final breath.

People sometimes ask, "Isn’t it hard to perform euthanasia?" The answer is yes — it can be incredibly hard. But it is also something I’ve come to see as a privilege, because it’s one of the most meaningful acts of care I can offer.

When a family invites me into their home to help a cherished companion pass peacefully, it’s a moment I approach with quiet reverence. In those quiet moments, I see love at its most raw and real. I see grief, yes — but I also see gratitude, kindness, and the deep bond that makes saying goodbye so difficult.

To provide a gentle, pain-free passing…
To ease suffering when nothing else can…
To hold space for families navigating heartbreak…
That is what I mean when I say it’s a privilege.

It’s a solemn honour. One that humbles me, every time.

Thank you to those who have trusted me with this personal journey.

The Forgotten Bottom – Featuring Burrito

This is Burrito, and yes — that look says it all. He had a feeling something was coming… and it wasn’t tuna. Cats don’t often suffer from a**l gland problems, but when they do, it’s no laughing matter. Burrito had been showing subtle signs — a little discomfort, a lot of licking, and that unmistakable “something’s not right” vibe. Thankfully, his owners noticed and reached out — even wondering if his a**l glands might be the issue. And they were right. When we expressed his glands, we released a black, thick material — the kind that tells us it had been building up for a while. Almost instantly, Burrito relaxed. That pensive expression turned into one of relief. Left too long, blocked a**l glands can become infected or even form painful abscesses that may rupture — so early intervention really matters. If your feline friend is fussing with their rear, scooting, or just seems a bit ‘off,’ don’t overlook the forgotten bottom.

🐾 Day 1 for Paws Plus Mobile Vets! 🐾

We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our journey than visiting the beautiful Victor Harbor to vaccinate and microchip some of the cutest Cavoodle puppies around! It was a day filled with cuddles, smiles, and the sweetest puppy snuggles 🐶💖

Big thanks to our wonderful hosts, Rachel & Kerrin from Cavoodle Love in Meadows, for making us feel so welcome. And here’s some great news—some of these little bundles of joy are still looking for their forever homes 🏡❤️

But in the meantime: Bee and Wasp Stings in Pets: What to Do
Bee and wasp stings are common for pets, especially as they investigate their surroundings with their noses. Most stings cause mild reactions, but life-threatening reactions can occur.

Key Points:

Bee Stings:

o Bees sting once and leave behind a stinger, which should be removed by scraping (e.g., with a piece of cardboard). Avoid using tweezers, as this may push more venom into the skin.
o Stingers are often hard to find especially in embedded with dark hair areas.
o Mild reactions include swelling, redness, and itching at the sting site. Severe symptoms may include vomiting, drooling, difficulty breathing and collapse.
o Allergic reactions can be delayed for sometimes up to 4 hours after the sting, so monitor your pet closely.

Wasp Stings:

o Wasps can sting multiple times as their stingers don’t lodge in the skin. Their stings often occur around the mouth due to food attraction.
o European wasps are aggressive and can cause severe reactions, including major swelling of the face, throat, and respiratory distress.
o Be on the lookout for wasp nests and avoid disturbing them; contact professionals if a nest is found.

First Aid:
• If a bee sting, try to remove the sting by scraping, not pinching.
• Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
• Keep your pet calm to prevent further spread of venom.
• Use an Elizabethan collar if your pet is scratching or pawing at the site.

If your pet has difficulty breathing, swelling in the face or throat or collapses seek immediate veterinary attention.

Preventative measures include keeping pets away from areas with flowers and not leaving food outside, as this can attract wasps.

Walking with your pet is not only great for them, but it’s a perfect way for us humans to stay active and take in the beauty around us. My selfie skills might need some work, but walking with Sadie always reminds me just how wonderful pets are in our lives. They bring so much joy and love, and we know they boost our mental and physical health—they truly are love that just keeps on giving. ❤️
We’re getting closer to launching our mobile vet service in mid-October! We’re still waiting on the last pieces of equipment and finalizing our IT system to manage your pet’s health records, but it’s all coming together. We’re looking forward to hitting the road soon and caring for your pets!
With the warmer weather, a quick spring reminder—watch out for snakes, especially on walks! If you think your pet might have been bitten, take them to the vet immediately, even if you're unsure. Early treatment can save lives, so don’t wait!

Paws Plus Mobile Vets Veterinarian

Spring is in the air here in Adelaide, and it’s garden prep time! But beware of the slimy taste testers—our garden snails. Keeping them at bay can be tricky, especially with pets around. Some snail baits are highly toxic to pets.

Metaldehyde baits (green pellets) can cause severe symptoms like tremors, seizures, and even death within 3-4 hours of ingestion. Iron-EDTA baits (red pellets) are safer but can still lead to liver failure if ingested. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to either of these, rush them to your vet immediately.

The wait and see approach is not a good option. I have treated too many cases of snail bait poisoning over the years and know that early treatment gives your furry best friend the best chance of survival. But sadly, some pets still succumb. It’s heartbreaking.

Always opt for pet-friendly methods. Some copper-based products, like copper tape, can work well. A simple trick? Place a log near your plants—snails will gather there, making them easy to remove in the morning. Got any pet-friendly snail control tips? Share below!
