⭐World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on 3 May to highlight the importance of protecting press freedom globally. It is also a day to acknowledge the commitment of journalists and those working in media who seek to report global news objectively and truthfully for all of us.
🌍The United Nations reports that over the past decade there has been a marked increase in violations against media freedom including physical attacks on journalists, intimidation, detention, and censorship of information.
📣This year the 'Shaping A Future of Peace' conference in Lusaka, Zambia brought attention to the continuing need for press freedom to be protected, and governments held accountable when violations occur. The conference also emphasised the connection between press freedom and upholding fundamental human rights.
📝World Press Freedom Day is an important opportunity for us to all consider how the news we receive can be affected by those in power, and how violations to press freedom can undermine civilian rights to truthful information.
