Critical mass.
The more he is aware of what was, the less able he becomes to feel what is. The biggest blessing is that enough of him remains to survey and assess what is left and what has been forever lost to him, and to ascertain what remains from which to reemerge and re-establish, and what should be left to lie.
Dissociation.
Assimilation of the devastation, acceptance, growth and lessons learned from the carnage and destruction from which he is only awakening will be part of chapters yet to be written.
But the story is not over, due to a tenacious perseverance and a plain refusal to accept failure as part of today. He chooses not to succumb.
Bent and twisted, knotted and entangled nearly to the point of uselessness, liberally dulled and defiled, numb and dumbfounded- YET UNBROKEN- he lives. His stubborn heart beats mechanically, like a metronome whose rhythm alone reminds him he is blessed, alive, and stronger for it, and though he inhabits the grey edges of the spectrum of existence, he realizes the seeds of his life, of color, of hope, dreams and goals are his own to sow, nourish and bring to fruition or leave to wither in the hard light of a reality only his own perception, direction and faith can soften, diffuse, or manifest reason or insanity from.
Stand up, praise God, and never surrender.
He dusts himself of and shakes his head because...
in choosing life, HE IS NOT DEFEATED.
