🦶Look at a newborn’s foot on an X-ray and you will see mostly empty space. Only a handful of the 26 bones have started to form; the rest is soft cartilage that gradually hardens over childhood and does not finish until the mid to late teens.Â
Â
🦶This is why Podiatrists look after children’s feet differently to adults’. Flat feet in a toddler are normal. A child who trips a lot, walks on their toes, complains of foot or heel pain, or wears shoes down unevenly is worth a look. Podiatrists can do further study to become Accredited Paediatric Podiatrists. If you love the idea of helping children, then you might love being a Podiatrist.Â
Â
🦶Growing feet are soft, and soft things are easy to steer in the right direction early.Â

🦶Feet change as you do, and so do the problems we see in the clinic. Kids get heel pain at their growth plates. Teenagers come in with ingrown nails and sprained ankles. People in their 30s and 40s can get Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles pain. Later on it’s potentially arthritis, bunions and nerve pain, and from 65 onwards nails, skin, balance and circulation become the focus.Â
Â
🦶Podiatrists are trained across every one of those life stages, from a toddler’s first steps to keeping an 85-year-old steady on their feet. Whatever your age, if something has changed in your feet, it is worth a look.Â

🦶Here is why feet matter so much to the rest of your body. Walking sends about one and a half times your body weight through each foot. Running sends up to three times. An 80 kg runner is landing roughly 240 kg on one foot, over and over, for the whole run.Â
Â
🦶Managing those forces is the science of biomechanics, and Podiatrists study it at university with a deep focus on everything from the knee down: how the foot lands, how it absorbs the load, and how that travels up to the ankle, knee and hip. When something in that chain is not working, feet, shins, knees and even backs can start to complain. That is where we come in.Â
