This 1976 Takamine Lawsuit Era guitar and old Felt Hat are two things that have literally been with me my whole life. They used to belong to my Mum.

I learned to play folk songs as a primary school age kid in Rotorua, New Zealand on this guitar. Once I had a few songs together I would go out every weekend and play on the street for people. People would put coins in this hat, and this was how I earned money.

So many things come and go in this life, I don’t associate much meaning to many things, except for this guitar.

This thing is responsible for how I show up in the world. My purpose and how I identify, relate and connect with other human beings. How I express myself.

I think I must be crazy to assign so much importance to music, and roots music especially in this day and age. As a grown man, as a father. But here I am. Crazy.

It’s always been a default for me and no matter how I have tried to escape it, it won’t let me.

So I’m going to be taking this old thing out on the street a bit more while I have some time and re-connect with that little, uncool, fat kid that thought he could have a crack.
