Angewandte Graduation Ceremony 2026

On 3 July, the graduates of the 2026 summer semester celebrated in the atrium of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Following a welcome speech by Rector Ulrike Kuch (.kuch), alumna Miriam Unterthiner (Miriam Unterthiner, Institute of Language Arts) delivered the keynote address. Musical performances were provided by Milde Sorte ( featuring Schleuse, REX69 and Stumpi). The Angewandte congratulates its graduates and wishes them the very best for their future.

Die Angewandte fordert die Umbenennung des Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platzes

Statement des Rektorats:

Letzte Woche kam es auf dem Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz zu antisemitischen Übergriffen auf einen Künstler und Studenten der Angewandten. Zuvor löste eine Aktion ebendieses Künstlers, die sich kritisch mit Denkmal und Platz beschäftigte, einen Polizeieinsatz aus.

Während Kunstaktionen also Polizeieinsätze auslösen, dient der Platz weiterhin Rechtsextremen und Neonazis als beliebtes Fotomotiv und als Versammlungsort. Die Lesart des schiefgestellten Denkmals als Mahnmal beeindruckt sie wenig. Eine kritische Erinnerungskultur ist unter diesen Umständen kaum möglich.
Deswegen fordern wir, das Rektorat der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, die sofortige Umbenennung des Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platzes in „Friedl-Dicker-Brandeis-Platz“, benannt nach der jüdischen Wiener Künstlerin und Designerin, die an der benachbarten damaligen Kunstgewerbeschule lernte und anschließend international reüssierte, bis sie von den N***s in Auschwitz ermordet wurde.
Es braucht an diesem Ort, jetzt und dringend, die deutliche Distanzierung zum Wirken des Antisemiten Karl Lueger, und als Kontrapunkt ein Zeichen für das jüdische, avantgardistische, internationale Wien.
