Während wir uns intensiv auf den Workshop 2026 vorbereiten, wollen wir einen Blick zurückwerfen auf studentische Projekte der letzten Jahre.

As we are intensively preparing for the workshop of 2026 we would like to look back on a few of our students’ projects of the last years.

The Archive of Music is conceived as an architectural interlock between Rovinj’s historic fabric, the open piazza, and the ascending landscape beyond. It binds itself to its context while opening outward — extending the civic surface into a new spatial and culturalthreshold between city and sea.The roof rises gently from the piazza, forming an elevated continuation of public space. This gesture transforms the act of entry into a spatial crescendo, guiding visitors from the open square into a more intimate world of sound, resonance, and memory. Thebuilding’s openness — without defined perimeter walls — allows it to be entered from all directions, dissolving the boundary between architecture and city.Within this continuity, the archive becomes both repository and experience: a place where the musical tradition of Rovinj can be felt through material, light, and rhythm. Architecture here acts not as enclosure, but as instrument — amplifying the city’s cultural voice and transforming the visitor’s passage into an act of listening.

Rovinj, with its picturesque old town and stunning Adriatic coast, has long been a magnet for tourism, becoming especially vibrant in the late 20th century as alively social and cultural hotspot. Over recent years, however, the dynamic has shifted. The oncethrivingconnection has eroded, with a growing divide betweenresidents and tourists. New architectural developments often reflect this disconnection, catering to short-term visitors rather than community needs.
The project site is located at the edge of Rovinj’s historic old town, adjacent to the harbor and the former Tabacchi manufactory. Currently occupied by a bus station, parking lots and commercial stores, this prime locationis underutilized, missing the opportunity to connect the town‘s rich cultural heritage with its waterfront. Positioned between the charm of the old town and theenergy of the harbor, the project seeks to reverse this disconnection by creating spaces that encouragerenewed interaction and shared experiences, offering aninclusive vision for Rovinj’s future as a city where locals and visitors alike can feel at home.
