“A song to be”
Once upon a time
A rose without a dime
Traveled the road
His song untold.
Poorer than dirt,
Holes in his shirt,
Whiteness no more,
His feet all sore.
Singing for food
And up to no good,
Days just go by
As clouds in the sky.
Many were mad,
Some perhaps sad
By his carefree life
Without even a wife
“This cannot be.
This we can’t see”.
Voices complained
And the rose retained.
“Should you wish free
As a bird to be “-
Said the fancy lily,
His coat all frilly,
“Give up your ways,
Your carefree days.
Find a job fast.
Our patience won’t last.”
Backs turned as one,
Showing they were done
With his jokes,
And tricks and pots.
Only one stood still
Thoughts running her mill,
Words not adding up
For the freedom trap.
“You can’t chain the free”
Said the wild poppy,
Shy, but with her wit
Strong, without a wilt.
“Freedom can’t be reached
When it’s only preached.
You can’t put a chain
Claiming it’s a gain.”
And just like so
She’s let him go.
His song was untold
She couldn’t grab hold.
And poorer he went
Without a dime spent,
No shoes on his feet,
No regret to meet.
A blushing poppy watched,
Remembering the touch
Of lips on her cheek
Grateful kiss he sneaked.
Their song in the works
As the tune unfolds,
Till next time they meet
And future fate greet.
