Tango Adventure

Seeing the video of the sad spectacle of Gustavo Naveira's disrespectful, angry performance with Giselle-Anne yesterday, and all the online commentary about it, reminded me this morning of an essay I wrote seven years ago, "How can you be a feminist and like tango?"
I wrote about being treated horribly by a random man that I called "Ponytail Guy" in this piece, and leaving the Floreal milonga, upset and telling the teacher who had led the class. He was a famous one and basically told me to shake it off. We do have to shake it off when such things happen, but we should also be aware such things happen and root out the sexism and disrespect from our culture. That experience helped me to ground even deeper into my quest to find equality and a vibrant, alive feeling as follower in the dance.
Here's that piece.
How Can You Be a Feminist and Like Tango? - Sasha Cagen, Life + Leadership Coach for Smart, Quirky Accomplished Women 40+, Author of Quirkyalone + To-Do List, Creator of Pussywalking “You’re not getting the lead,” he tells me. Gruff, mid-fifties, beady eyes, a ponytail dwindling halfway down his back, Ponytail Man chose me as his partner for this advanced tango class at Floreal, a traditional milonga in Buenos Aires. Last Sunday I taught my "Self-Compassion for Quirkyalones" class, designed to help you develop your self-compassionate voice so your inner critic doesn't get the mic all the time.
In an hour, I taught how to develop the kinder, gentler, "oh honey" voice inside of you that will actually be much more effective at helping you get things done and feel happier and more regulated.
Self-compassion is especially important for Quirkyalones and it's essential for everyone!
I just met with a client who attended and she remarked that there was much more participation than in most Zoom sessions she has attended. My style is to draw people out so we are learning together. So this one is not just me talking, it's a lot of real-world sharing that is so valuable for us to hear to show that we have a lot more in common than we realize.
I will share the class soon via my newsletter as a free resource for a limited amount of time. If you want to see it, sign up for my newsletter and you will get this and lots of other good things!
