Humane Language Services

💬 Plain language is communication in which wording, structure, and design are so clear that intended readers can easily:
— find what they need,
— understand what they find, and
— use that information.

💡 Some recommendations made by Joanna Richardson, former Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) President, for plain language in translation:

1. Write short sentences: even if it means chopping up an excessively long sentence and rewriting it into 2 or 3 sentences.
2. Use active voice: the passive voice is useful but is always longer and less direct.
3. Avoid nominalizations: Use the verb form of nouns to make your writing stronger.
4. Avoid sexist language.
5. Use everyday words: If you must use jargon, explain it.
6. Avoid the negative: it is not a clear way of thinking.
7. Use personal pronouns: address your reader directly.

✅ Unlike the translation project we just published, this one called for gender markers. You see, Spanish is a grammatically gendered language; that is, most nouns (as well as the adjectives and articles modifying them) mark gender.

❕ We could have gone with the “easy” solution and use the generic masculine gender for every noun, which is considered correct by many and encouraged by the prescriptive use of the Spanish language.

Instead, we equitably distributed the two grammatical genders in the six nouns so that school girls are represented too.

❗ A diferencia del proyecto de traducción que acabamos de publicar, en este debíamos marcar género en los sustantivos que nombran puestos de trabajo.

➕ Podríamos haber optado por la solución más simple: el género gramatical masculino en cada uno de los sustantivos, considerado correcto por muchas personas e incluso alentado desde el uso prescriptivo del idioma.

En cambio, distribuimos equitativamente los dos géneros gramaticales en los seis sustantivos para que las estudiantes también estuvieran representadas.

❓ ¿Sabías que la Educación Sexual Integral (ESI) y el lenguaje transincluyente comparten el objetivo de promover la inclusión y respetar la diversidad?

⚖ Y si bien en Humane Language Services valoramos la Ley argentina de Educación Sexual Integral, sancionada en 2006 (seis años antes que la Ley de Identidad de Género), creemos que hay que actualizarla para que refleje de verdad todas las identidades.

En ese sentido, el lenguaje neutro en cuanto al género es clave para no malgenerizar ni alienar a personas trans, no binaries ni a quienes no se ajustan a las normas de género establecidas por la sociedad.

❕ Trabajemos en conjunto para crear un mundo más inclusivo para todas las personas, que incluya a Supertravita.
