Do you or your child self-quiz?

If not, check out this powerful technique.

Close your book and put your notes away. Now try to write or sketch everything you know about the topic you are trying to learn.

You won't remember it all but that is okay.

The process of trying to recall is beneficial in itself.

When you have exhausted what comes to mind then open your book/notes and start to determine what you missed and what you need to work on more.

The basic idea is to actively engage with the material by attempting to recall it from memory, rather than simply reviewing it passively.

There is significant neuroscience research backing the effectiveness of this technique.

One way in which I incorporate self-quizzing into my teaching is that I ask students to resolve out-of-memory problems they got wrong in homework or problems we solved in class that they initially found challenging.
