🧩 What is PDA? (Persistent Drive for Autonomy)

PDA is a behavioral profile that may be seen in some autistic individuals. It is characterized by an intense need to avoid everyday demands and expectations, often because they trigger overwhelming anxiety or a strong need to maintain a sense of control.

Many professionals and autistic advocates now prefer the term Persistent Drive for Autonomy because it better reflects the underlying need for autonomy rather than suggesting intentional defiance.

Common Characteristics

💙 Avoiding everyday demands—even enjoyable ones.
🧠 High levels of anxiety when feeling pressured.
💬 Using negotiation, distraction, or humor to avoid tasks.
🎭 Strong imagination and role play.
⚡ Rapid changes in mood or behavior when overwhelmed.
🤝 A strong need for autonomy and control.

What PDA is NOT

❌ It is not laziness.
❌ It is not simply being “defiant.”
❌ It is not caused by poor parenting.

How to Support Someone with PDA

✔️ Offer choices instead of direct commands.
✔️ Use calm, flexible, and collaborative communication.
✔️ Reduce unnecessary pressure and demands.
✔️ Build trust through patience and understanding.
✔️ Recognize that anxiety often drives the behavior.

💚 Important Note:
PDA is not currently recognized as a separate diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR or ICD-11. However, many clinicians, researchers, and autism organizations recognize it as a profile that may occur within autism. Research is ongoing, and support should always be individualized.
