In Hawaii, NREL scientists believe it pays to take what they call a ’systems approach’ – in which the whole mix of clean energy, distribution and transmission, supply and demand, can all be looked at under the same lens because the scale is so much more manageable. That, they indicate, compares with a typically more ad hoc, project by project approach that may be more commonplace on the US mainland because of the sheer size of the continental mass and political make-up.
