Strength Isn’t the Same as Safety (Part 1)
We praise strength in pregnancy and birth constantly.
“You’re strong.”
“You’ve got this.”
“You were made for this.”
And sometimes, those words land beautifully. But sometimes… they don’t feel empowering.
Sometimes they feel like pressure.
Because strength is not the same thing as safety.
Strength is your ability to keep going.
Safety is your ability to soften.
Strength is pushing through.
Safety is being held while you go through.
And birth should never require you to be strong just to survive it emotionally.
Why this matters?
Many birthing people don’t feel traumatised because birth was hard.
They feel traumatised because they felt unsafe while it was hard.
And safety isn’t just about medical outcomes. Safety is also:
- being spoken to kindly
- being listened to
- being asked for consent
- being given time
- being respected when you say no
- being reassured without being dismissed
You can be the strongest person in the world… and still feel unsafe if you’re not emotionally protected.
A gentle truth
Some people leave birth saying:
“I didn’t feel supported.”
“I felt rushed.”
“I didn’t understand what was happening.”
“I didn’t feel like I had a voice.”
And then others leave saying:
“It was intense… but I felt safe.”
“I felt like they explained everything.”
“I felt like my body was trusted.”
“I felt held.”
That difference is not strength.
That difference is support.
A question to reflect on!
What would make you feel safer in birth — not stronger?
Because your goal doesn’t have to be “handle everything.” Your goal can be:
feel safe while you go through it.
