Few Things to Learn During Selling Freight 🚢📦
Navigating the world of freight sales requires a solid understanding of several critical logistics concepts. Here's a concise guide to some essential terms:
1. Incoterms: International Commercial Terms (Incoterms) define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international trade, clarifying who handles shipping, insurance, and tariffs.
2. Bill of Lading (BOL): A legal document issued by a carrier to acknowledge receipt of cargo for shipment. It serves as a shipment receipt and outlines the terms of the transport.
3. Freight Forwarder: An intermediary who arranges the storage and shipping of merchandise on behalf of shippers. They coordinate with carriers, handle documentation, and ensure smooth logistics.
4. Carrier: The entity responsible for the transportation of goods, which can be by road, rail, air, or sea.
5. Customs House Agent (CHA): A licensed individual or company that handles the documentation and procedures required for goods to clear through customs.
6. Lead Time: The total time from the initiation of a process to its completion, crucial for planning and inventory management.
7. Demurrage vs. Detention:
Demurrage: Charges incurred when cargo stays at the port beyond the allotted free time.
Detention: Fees for holding onto the carrier's equipment (like containers) beyond the agreed period outside the port.
8. FOB vs. CIF:
FOB (Free on Board): The seller's responsibility ends when goods are loaded onto the shipping vessel; the buyer assumes risk thereafter.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): The seller covers the cost, insurance, and freight to the destination port, bearing risk until the goods arrive.
9. DDP vs. DAP:
DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): The seller bears all costs and risks, including duties and taxes, delivering goods to the buyer's location.
DAP (Delivered at Place): The seller delivers goods to a specified location, but the buyer is responsible for import duties and taxes.
