In 2015, NASA awarded $850,000 for the NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge to submissions answering the question: How do we recycle on the moon.
Six waste streams were identified to represent the most frequently discarded items astronauts encounter while in space:
Fabrics
Food packaging
Structural elements for temporary structures
Foam packaging
Extravehicular Activities (EVA) waste
Other packaging and gloves
