I have been thinking...and I decided I'd like to share a few stories that if never spoken of from the horses mouth... Will always remain hearsay... Let me start by posting this legendary Zimbabwean broadcasting icon Tich Mataz. This is gonna be a long one so read when u have got a moment.
Wow Tich always has a way of speaking into people's lives positively... It's like his voice has a way of commanding the universe to have favour on you.
For me.. it was at Miss Malaika Semi final in Bulawayo. This was a distinct time because I was jus another guy from the streets who wanted to sing on the big stage. Unbeknown to many, like everyone else I had to audition for it. At that time a few months before, I had recorded Vulela and was doing rehearsals daily for the dance routines. My philosophy was u have to be prepared for any opportunities that may present themselves. Little did I know that these rehearsals would pay off shortly after.
Soooo, I grew up in Groombridge, Mt. Pleasant however, I had to do my rehearsals in Northwood, the other side of Mt. Pleasant. Distance was about 3-4km. So we would do rehearsals for Vulela at All Souls Church in Northwood. Rehearsals were 2 hours or so everyday.
Now to train my lungs and body to not tire so easily whilst on stage, I would jog all the way to Northwood from Groombridge to and fro..remember this was daily. I didn't jus stop at jogging the entire distance... I made sure I sang the song as I would on stage as I jogged so that I could get used to the demands of dancing and singing at same time. So yes, I ran 3-4 km one way singing the same song over and over out loud so I could learn how to breathe and how to conserve my energy on stage.
The crew that helped me choreograph and perform the dances for me FREE OF CHARGE consisted of these guys... Musekiwa Samuriwo, Diekmann Wieslamm, Shingi Jangara aka Mr. Hingis and Allan aka Hwiza... (sorry bro I forgot ur real name). I can't thank you guys enough for your generosity, patience and love. Thank u gentlemen.
Now I think it was 99/2000 or 2001..kudhara ikoko... Tich Mataz Introduced an unknown Sanii Makhalima to the professional stage.. We had met him before through singing competitions during my high school years... And he knew very much of the talent I possessed but this was different...it was the real world filled with real people and journalists and not your highschool mates and all... this was not Miss Cosmo, Miss Harare or Miss Vibe...it was everything the real performing world was. The big stage.
So when we arrived in Bulawayo and saw the stage...our hearts sank!!!!
We had practiced all our dances in the normal format, Me in the middle with two dancers either side of me... However, the stage in Bulawayo would not be able to accommodate this setup.
It was a standard modelling T- Catwalk ramp (whatever you call it) and therefore we couldn't perform the way we rehearsed. It was about 4pm and our slot was for 8/9pm. Sound check was at 5 and we didn't have time to re- rehearse the moves or rework. We literally sat on the floor thinking what to do.
We eventually agreed that in one of the routines... My timing would have to be impeccable so that I could fit through the guys during the dance on the narrow catwalk...there was no time to rehearse this. Let's move on...
It was showtime, here I was dressed in my custom made white suit/tuxedo like and one of the brown/golden 'summer shirts' that was made for me by my tailor. I had brand new white leather shoes.. however the shoes were a size small and were very very painful to wear. But hey...you have to look the part... So what I did is I sat back stage wearing my slippers .. and when I was told it was my turn to perform .that's when I put the size small dancing shoes on that hurt like crazy on!!! I performed with these shoes regardless of how they hurt!! The stage was built over the swimming pool... And it's was slippery and super icy which made dancing on it not only difficult but also very dangerous. We didn't care...we had travelled all this way and our time had finally arrived.I wanted to sing.. and my time had come to showcase what I could do..
Tich Mataz introduced me. He spoke sooo highly of me and my talents (I was happy) but at same time...Inside i was like duuuuuudddddeeeee these shoes are sore....let's go let's go... Finally I performed my lungs out ... And got a standing ovation....π±π±π± I was even more humbled when my sister who was the biggest thing in the country at that time Plaxedes Wenyika came and hugged me and was like...ohhh wow π²... She really motivated me with her affection and spirit of love...she told me in not so many words that the world is my oyster (thanx Placky)
Now later on, when there was an interlude in the show.. Tich UNEXPECTEDLY came to me and said "the judges are still tallying the votes..I think you should go back on stage a redo your performance" ... I was like π±π±π±π± yes yes yes!!
He re- introduced me on stage, and got everyone off their seats I I re-performed Vulela. When the night started.... both the song and I weren't known... I performed got another standing ovation from the crowd and by the end of the night... Vulela was on people's lips and the Sani Makhalima brand was officially born. This performance marked the beginning of my professional musical journey...
Tich Mataz...I thank you for that powerful MC introduction and finessing the people to actually anticipate what and whom you were hyping. I owe you for that big time. That moment in my life shaped a lot of positive things for me... I jus wanted to say...
Mkoma..thank you sooooo much.... Kusatenda huroyi! Thank u bro... Ayeye!!
