IN LINE with Chief Justice Mumba Malila’s recent pledge to ensure that court cases of national interest are aired live on television, judgement in the election eligibility case involving former President Edgar Lungu will be carried live on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
The decision marks a significant first time that a case will be held on camera in Zambia and opens the door for similar high profile judicial proceedings in future.
Judiciary deputy director for corporate communication Kalumba Chisambisha-Slavin confirmed on Monday that the proceedings involving the eligibility case will be filmed inside the Constitutional Court.
“ZNBC has been allowed to broadcast live from the courtroom."
In August this year, Dr Malila told journalists that a Judiciary committee had approved a proposal for the introduction of live broadcasts of some court proceedings of national interest and has since started working on modalities for implementation.
The Chief Justice said the Judiciary’s policy committee is in total agreement with his proposal of filming some court proceedings.
Dr Malila emphasised the importance of such an initiative, noting that opening the courts to public inspection and actively engaging in the exchange of information were essential pillars of a functioning democracy.
