Nursing is a calling, we leave our sick home to take care of others - ZUNMO
AS the world observes the International Nurses Week, the Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) has reminded the public that nursing is not just a job, but a noble calling rooted in sacrifice, compassion and selflessness.

Lusaka Province ZUNMO chairperson Racheal Chanda said nurses often leave their own sick family members at home just to care for other people’s loved ones in health facilities.
“We leave our sick ones at home and rush to the hospital to nurse others. That is what it means to be a nurse, to serve, to give and to heal,” said Chanda.
She explained that nurses have the heart to care for the vulnerable, from newborns clinging to life to elderly patients in critical condition and often work long hours just to ensure that their patients are well.
Chanda further urged the public to look at nurses with empathy and respect, noting that behind every uniform is a human being who had made a vow to save lives no matter the personal cost.
She said ZUNMO continues to sensitise its nurses on the importance of upholding the values and vows they took upon joining the profession and called on regulatory bodies like the General Nursing Council to ensure nurses maintain ethical standards.
“Let’s not forget that nursing is a calling. It’s not just about medicine, it’s about humanity,” she added.
“Being a nurse is a calling. People should look at nurses in a positive way.”
And the world celebrates International Nurses Day on Monday next week and celebrations will be decentralised, with different provinces hosting events in various districts.
Western Province will commemorate in Lukulu, Central Province in Mumbwa, North-Western in Manyinga, Copperbelt in Kitwe, Luapula in Kawambwa, Northern in Luwingu, Muchinga in Isoka, Lusaka in Kafue, Southern in Chirundu, and Eastern Province in Chipata.
The day, observed every May 12, celebrates the contribution of nurses globally and marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Peptic ulcers
Peptic ulcers are open sores on the inner lining of the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine.
Causes
The most common causes of peptic ulcers are infection with the germ Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve).
Stress and spicy foods do not cause peptic ulcers. But they can make symptoms worse.
