I am a 34, year old man from Lusaka, and I have been married for 8 years. We have two children together.
My wife and I are managing well financially. I work for a private company while she runs a small business.
About a year ago, I started noticing changes in her behavior. She became very protective of her phone. If a message came in, she would quickly turn the screen away. Whenever I asked who was texting her, she would get angry and accuse me of being insecure.
I ignored the signs because I trusted her.
Earlier this year, I got an opportunity to attend a two week training in Kitwe. My wife was happy for me and even helped me pack my bags.
A week into the trip, one of my neighbors called me.
"Boss, I don't want problems in your marriage, but there is something you need to know."
He told me that almost every evening when, Im out of town working, a certain man would visit my house.
I was angry but also confused. I decided not to confront her immediately.
When I returned home, I acted normal. A few days later, I got her phone while she was bathing. What I found broke me.
There were hundreds of WhatsApp messages on her locked chat, between her and another man. Since she is my wife it was easy for me to guess her pass code.They had been together for nearly two years.
The painful part was not even the cheating.
The painful part was reading messages where she mocked me. She would tell him I was too soft, too trusting, and that I would never find out.
I confronted her.
At first, she denied everything.
When I showed her the messages, she started crying and begging for forgiveness.
Then she revealed something that shocked me.
The man was not a stranger.
It was my cousin.
The same cousin who attended our wedding. The same cousin who sat in my living room drinking my drinks and calling me "brother."
I felt like my whole world had collapsed.
