Meet the hands behind every meal šŸ’›

Every story starts somewhere. Ours started with a simple question: why are so many children in South Africa not getting the nutrition they need to grow and thrive?

Meet the StartWell Foods team, the people behind our factory floor. Every single day they produce, pack and deliver StartWell Cereal to make sure it reaches the children who need it, on time, every time. Rain or shine, they show up. Many of our team members are parents themselves, so this work is personal. We know exactly what is at stake in every batch that leaves the factory.

The Foods team are the backbone of our organisation. Without them, there is no StartWell Cereal reaching 21,000 children across 9 provinces. Their care and consistency are what makes our promise to ECDs possible.

Next time you see a pack of StartWell Cereal, know that it passed through the hands of people who genuinely care about the child on the other end.

Tag someone who deserves to know their support keeps this team running

199 little reasons to smile in Winterveldt🌱

Across 6 ECD centres in Winterveldt, Pretoria, we are helping feed 199 children with StartWell Cereal. From tiny centres of 7 to bustling ones of 74, every child matters just as much as the next.

At God Is Good Day Care Centre, caregivers have watched something beautiful unfold since the StartWell Cereal programme started: children steadily gaining healthy weight, growing stronger, and genuinely looking forward to mealtimes. One little one who used to be worryingly thin is now healthier and full of energy, a change that has brought real joy to caregivers and parents alike.

That is what consistent nutrition does. That is what your support makes possible.

Thank you to our donor partner inPharma for helping make this happen. Together, we are building healthier futures for Winterveldt’s children, one bowl at a time. 🄣

Yesterday we gathered. Yesterday we learned. Yesterday we chose better for our children.

Nearly 90 people, teachers, partners, donors, and caregivers, came together to become the superheroes their children need.

We covered topics that matter deeply to the health of our nation:

The biggest cause of death among women in South Africa is diabetes, and sugar is at the root of it. Eat better south africa and the The Noakes Foundation brought this to life with a powerful sugar demonstration, showing just how much sugar is hiding in the everyday foods we eat. It was eye opening, and it changed the way the room looked at their plates.

We unpacked what it means to nourish with purpose. Animal sourced foods and vegetables are not extras, they are the foundation of a growing child’s brain and body.

We also explored the power of play. Strategic, intentional play that focuses on gross motor skills has a direct correlation to academic achievement. When children move, climb, run and balance, their brains develop in ways that prepare them for school and for life.

And we reminded each other that a well nourished caregiver raises a well nourished child.

This is what community looks like. This is StartWell.

Big smiles from the Laureus Hub Connect Summit 2026.

We had the privilege of joining a room full of passionate people who believe sport is one of the most powerful tools for good.

We shared our cause, our product, and our mission to give every child the nutritional foundation they deserve and came home with a whole new network of friends for the Foundation.

Here’s to the connections that change lives.

šŸŒ Today is World Hunger Day,
But hunger is only part of the story.

Stunting, the silent crisis robbing children of their full potential doesn’t just leave kids smaller. It affects how they think, learn, focus, and feel. And heartbreakingly, it echoes across generations.

At the StartWell Foundation, we’re not waiting for change we’re manufacturing it. šŸ

Our factory in Springs is one of the first not-for-profit food extrusion facilities in South Africa, producing nutrient-dense, ready-to-eat meals packed with the bio-available proteins growing children desperately need and rarely get.

The numbers speak for themselves:
+-21,000 meals a day. +-420,000 a month. More than 4.6 million a year.
Delivered across 6 provinces to the children who need it most.

Because filling a bowl isn’t enough. Every meal we produce is designed to fuel brain development, physical growth, and lifelong health — giving children a real shot at reaching their full potential.

This World Hunger Day, know that solutions exist. They’re being built, packed, and delivered. One nutrient-rich meal at a time.

There’s a new food pyramid:
and it brings a clearer message about how we eat.

The US Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Agriculture have unveiled a modern food pyramid that turns everything we knew about a balanced diet plan on its head. Literally.

The updated dietary guidelines return to a simple principle: eat real food. Prioritise high-quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while reducing highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates.

Several notable updates stand out:

A strong emphasis on fruit and vegetables, now making up half the plate

A recommendation to choose full-fat dairy options rather than low-fat alternatives

A new guideline advising no added sugars for children under 10.

And perhaps the most significant shift: a marked increase in recommended protein intake, with greater emphasis on animal-based protein sources over plant-based proteins.

Overall, the message is moving away from restrictive rules and toward a more straightforward focus on nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods that support health across all ages.
