John Huma Brand 🔥
Jermaine Dupri (also known as JD) is an American record producer, rapper, songwriter, and music executive born on September 23, 1972, in Asheville, North Carolina. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he is the son of Michael Mauldin, a Columbia Records executive who introduced him to the music industry at an early age.
Early Career & Breakthrough
Dupri's career began before age 10 when he danced on stage with Diana Ross during one of his father's concerts.
By age 12, he was performing as a breakdancer with the hip-hop group Whodini, appearing in their music video for "Freaks Come Out at Night" and touring with legends like Run-D.M.C., Kurtis Blow, and Grandmaster Flash.
His breakthrough as a producer came in 1991 when he discovered teenage rappers Chris Kelly and Chris Smith at an Atlanta mall and formed the duo Kris Kross. Their 1992 single "Jump"—written and produced by Dupri—topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became the 23rd most successful song of the decade. Their debut album Totally Krossed Out sold over 7 million copies.
So So Def Recordings
In 1993, Dupri founded So So Def Recordings in a joint venture with Columbia Records. The label became one of the most influential imprints in hip-hop and R&B history, launching the careers of:
Xscape – Their debut Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha (1993) went platinum with hits like "Just Kickin' It"
Da Brat – Her 1994 debut Funkdafied made her the first solo female rapper to achieve platinum status
Bow Wow – Discovered at age 11, released double-platinum Beware of Dog (2000)
Jagged Edge, Anthony Hamilton, Dem Franchize Boyz, and YoungBloodZ
