On Saturday the 14th of October, which should have been a normal family get together, quickly turned into a nightmare for the Terblanche family.
At around 11:30, family parents noticed their 4-month-old baby, Lumay -Evah was acting abnormally. Rene, Lumay -Evah’s grandmother, a Professional nurse and a Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa Instructor, jumped into action after identifying that her grandchild is blue in the face and hands.
This unfolding tragedy became worse when they realised the are about 80km from the nearest hospital and that they have no cell phone reception to call for help.
The family jumped in a car and started driving towards hospital, just before Rene realised that her grandchild suddenly became a limp body 5kg body in her hands. She immediately started CPR and continued with compressions and breaths on the road to hospital.
30 minutes later, while doing CPR on the floor of the vehicle, they were approaching a provincial hospital in a town close by.
Seconds before arrival Lumay -Evah started crying and was responding.
Lumay -Evah was flown by Netcare911’s emergency helicopter to Waterfall City hospital where she is currently awake and fully responsive.
“Although she was my grandchild, I could emotionally disconnect myself, and knew i had to stick to the basics and try and save her life!”
