I know. It sounds completely backwards. Let me explain.
When your tear film breaks down, your eye triggers what's called reflex tearing — it floods itself with watery tears as a distress signal. But those emergency tears don't have the right composition to fix the underlying dryness. So your eye keeps triggering the reflex. You keep watering. The dryness never gets addressed.
I see patients every week who've been told their eyes are "fine" because they produce tears. But they have significant dry eye disease.
