Diving and Underwater Hull Cleaning Operations
Cape Town & Saldanha Bay
South Africa

Safety and responsibility are not optional in commercial diving and hull cleaning — they are the foundation of sustainable operations.

Professional diving practices protect lives, vessels, marine ecosystems, and the long-term integrity of our industry. Responsible hull cleaning helps prevent environmental harm, supports biosecurity, and ensures compliance with evolving maritime regulations.

By maintaining high standards, proper training, and environmentally responsible methods, we not only protect our teams and oceans — we build trust and professionalism across the maritime sector.

Propeller appearance is often associated with performance, but the more relevant factor is surface roughness.

Surface condition directly influences frictional resistance through the water, making finish quality an important consideration in propeller maintenance and efficiency management.

Achieving the correct finish is not simply a polishing exercise. The required approach depends on several factors, including:
• Propeller material composition (bronze vs stainless alloys)
• Fouling type and severity
• Abrasive selection and application method
• Required surface finish specification

Incorrect abrasive selection or excessive polishing can remove protective surface layers, affect material condition, and contribute to premature wear.

The objective is not to achieve the highest possible level of shine, but rather a controlled and consistent surface condition appropriate for the propeller material and operational requirements.

How are finish standards defined and controlled within your operations?

A big step forward in Pelican Bay Harbour, Velddrif!

The salvage of sunken vessels was completed as a joint effort between 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐒𝐀, and 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, with 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐧 leading and coordinating the recovery of the first of three vessels.

An old derelict vessel poses a few challenges when trying to get it into a floating state again.
The structure is often compromised, which raises the risks to personnel, equipment and the public.

Having a fail-safe method and risk assessment is paramount.
And success is always well received.

Projects like this take teamwork, careful planning, and a strong focus on protecting our marine environment.

Great collaboration all around to get the job done safely and efficiently.
Well done to everyone involved.
