One of the most fascinating parts of working in marketing is seeing how quickly and completely language evolves over time.

The way Gen Alpha speaks, both online and in person, is completely different to Millennials, and both are universes away from Gen X. Certain words immediately make sense to one audience while another group is either cringing (aging ourselves here) or has absolutely no idea what is happening. 😭

That is why understanding who your audience is matters so much in content writing. You are not simply writing in English anymore. To be understood, we must move with the times, despite it feeling like you’re writing in completely different versions of English depending on who the content is for.

The humour changes. The phrasing changes. Even the way people structure sentences changes depending on the audience, and keeping this in mind will allow you to speak your target audience's language.

Good marketing is not only about getting information across. It is about making people feel like the content was written for them, by them. And in some cases, you may just need to bite the bullet and employ a small child to translate.
