Today, we honor Dr. Lillie May Carroll Jackson, one of Baltimore’s most influential civil rights leaders.

Known as the “Mother of Freedom,” Dr. Jackson led nonviolent protests, strengthened the Baltimore NAACP into one of the nation’s most influential branches, and helped secure legal victories that challenged segregation and racial discrimination.

Her courage and leadership helped shape the fight for justice in Baltimore and throughout Maryland.
