Anyone else? I wasn’t very popular in high school until I got good at sports. More people wanted to hang out in college when I started playing music at Greek events. No one in Nashville would let me play on their stage until I was on American Idol. No agent would talk to me until I got 100k followers. One day, I looked around and thought… “do these people even care about me? Or only about what I can do? A scary thought.

Plot twist: this song is wrong. It came from a real place, but it’s not how friends and family actually work. Deep down, people care about how you make them feel more than they care about what you can do. When I realized that, those chains broke off. I looked at my friends and my family and felt grateful and secure. Because of that, it’s actually much more difficult to sing this song well lol. I don’t feel it like I used to. Takes more work to get back to that place because it’s not natural to me anymore.

So why keep singing it? Art is meant to capture the human experience, and although my fears weren’t based in reality, they were very real. If that’s you, I want you to know 2 things: 1) you’re not alone and I hope you can hear in this song that I’ve been there. 2) good news: your family and friends really do love you. For who you are.
