I’ve lived in both Ann Arbor and Columbus, so I know firsthand how electric the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry is. Most years, it’s intense but also fun—a celebration of history and community.

This year, the game made headlines for reasons beyond the scoreboard. After Michigan’s upset win, emotions spilled over into a postgame altercation. The aftermath wasn’t the finest moment for either side.

Rivalries thrive on competition, but they’re at their best when paired with respect. We can look to other great athletes for examples of how to win and lose with grace. Whether lifting a trophy or walking off the court after a loss, they’ve shown that dignity doesn’t diminish intensity—it elevates it.

The same holds true in leadership and life. In heated moments, our reactions can overshadow our achievements. When we win, humility shines brighter than boasting. When we lose, resilience and sportsmanship leave a lasting impression.

The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is bigger than any one game or season. It’s a reminder of what passion can build and, occasionally, what it can undo. Competition should be rooted in respect, so the rivalry continues to be as great as it deserves to be.
