At 6:27 p.m. EST on Tuesday (Jan. 10), the RS1 rocket from ABL Space Systems carried out its first orbital launch from the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Alaska's ’s namesake Island (2327 GMT; 2:27 p.m. local time in Alaska).
"After liftoff, RS1 encountered a problem and shut down too soon. In collaboration with PSCA and the FAA, the team is working through its anomaly response processes, ABL tweeted 23 minutes after liftoff. (The abbreviations stand for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska.)
"As would be expected in this case, the launch facility has been damaged. Fires have diminished, and everyone on staff is secure. When the investigations are over, we will make plans to resume our flight. We appreciate our partners.
