A timber wall frame has a few key parts, and each one has a job.

Studs are the vertical members.
Top and bottom plates tie the wall together.
Lintel (header) carries load over doors and windows.
King studs + trimmers/jacks support the lintel.
Sill forms the base of the window opening.
Nogs/dwangs stiffen the wall and provide fixing points.
Cripples fill short sections above/below openings.

If the framing is wrong, the lining and finish will show it later.
