✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨

The Vampires of York, Maine by Jonathan Cook feels like someone threw vampires, mafia crime, shark attacks, conspiracy theories, and one aggressively nosy middle-aged man into a blender and hit purée.

The SECOND Jerry gets pulled into the missing girl investigation, the story spirals into complete chaos and I was just sitting there like… “sir maybe go home???” But no. Jerry believes in making bad decisions professionally.

Jerry O’Shaughnessy is the definition of “main character syndrome.” This man drinks too much, jokes during serious situations, gets beaten up repeatedly, and STILL keeps investigating like he’s immortal. Honestly? Respect.

He has that messy, sarcastic energy that makes you want to yell at him and root for him at the same time. Every chapter felt like watching your favorite disaster character accidentally uncover another terrifying secret.

The vibes in this book are SO weird in the best way. Haunted coastal town? Check. Creepy history? Check. Sexy psychic neighbor? CHECK.

There’s this constant feeling that something awful is lurking underneath everything, and the mix of realism with supernatural horror actually works really well. One minute it’s crime thriller energy, the next minute vampires casually enter the chat like they pay rent there. Maine was STRESSFUL.

What really surprised me was how much deeper the story got underneath all the chaos. The Salem Witch Trial references and commentary about fear, violence, and human cruelty added a darker layer that stuck with me.

The book basically says, “yeah vampires are scary but have you met humans?” and honestly, fair point. Beneath the humor and madness, there’s actually a lot of commentary about corruption and how history keeps repeating itself.

If you love books that feel like a supernatural fever dream mixed with a crime show binge-watch, this is absolutely your vibe.

QOTD: What’s the most unhinged small-town book you’ve ever read?
