It's the big reveal! WAVES is proud to introduce our 3rd in the Faculty and Course line up with an amazing return presenter who always has informational and popular courses for us, Dr. Jeff Myers, DO, EdM, EMT-P, FAEMS.

Dr. Myers helps EMS providers up their game and become better clinicians through education and mentoring. He has a 38-year history in emergency services as an EMT, Paramedic, EMS Physician and EMS Medical Director. He trained at the University at Buffalo in emergency medicine and EMS and has worked in academic and community emergency departments in several states. He has been an active EMS medical director for several services during his career. He has a dynamic style and expertise in making complex concepts simple. He is active as an EMS physician and educator nationally. Dr. Myers most recently was the EMS Medical Director
for Susquehanna Regional EMS in Williamsport, PA and currently works clinically at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY.

Dr. Myers will be presenting Hit From Behind: The Challenge of Identifying Posterior Circulation and Brainstem Stroke Syndromes in our 5-6p time slot. Posterior circulation and brainstem strokes can be just as debilitating as hemiplegic strokes but are often more subtle and easily missed. They are also much less likely to be treated aggressively as anterior or middle circulation strokes, which the NIH Stroke Scale does a better job identifying. In this case-based session, we will go through several examples, allowing you to
better identify these devastating types of strokes.

WAVES is proud to continue introducing our Faculty and Course line up in our 6th Big Reveal with another new presenter to us, Ken Bouvier, ECO, Paramedic, who serves as the Fire Chief at the Westwego, Louisiana Fire Department. He is an Executive Chief Officer, paramedic and professional speaker known both nationally and internationally. His Fire/EMS career began in 1975 as a volunteer firefighter who advanced through the ranks to become the Fire Chief for Monsanto where he served 37 years.

Coincidingly, he worked for New Orleans EMS for 33 years and retired as Deputy Chief of Operations. While working at New Orleans EMS he commanded major New Orleans events including Mardi Gras, Super Bowls, hurricanes and managed the crews and appeared on the A&E Television Show NIGHTWATCH. Westwego Fire Department is a Class 2, Combination Department located directly across the Mississippi River from New Orleans.

Ken will be presenting, “No Sweet Tea for Me!” Basic Understanding of Diabetes. Diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect the way your body uses blood glucose, commonly known as blood sugar. Glucose is the main source of energy for the cells that make up muscle and tissues. Glucose is your body’s main fuel! During this session we will review diabetes and how it affects patients differently. Maintaining your diabetes is a full-time responsibility. Diabetics who are non-compliant with their diet and medication often become patients and require Diabetic Emergency Care. Diabetes can lead to serious life-threatening complications. In children it is even more difficult because the child does not recognize signs and symptoms on coming. During this session we will review a unique presentation that will show how diabetes affects patients of all ages and will heavily focus on the obese patient and those that are bed bounded.

WAVES is proud to continue introducing our Faculty and Course line up in our 5th Big Reveal with presenter Paul Werfel, MS, NRP. Paul is the CEO The Werfel Group LLC, a public safety consulting firm. A prolific international speaker, and author of over 50 articles, magazine columns, and book sections, Paul was the EMT and Paramedic Program Director at Stony Brook University for thirty-one years. In addition to fourteen years as a NYC Paramedic, Professor Werfel has served as: The Program Coordinator for Advanced Cardiac, Trauma and Pediatric life support at the Emergency Care Institute at Bellevue Hospital-NYU Medical Center in New York City, and as Emergency Care Programs Coordinator at Jamaica Hospital, Queens N.Y. In addition to being the Director of the Stony Brook Program, He also served as Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Clinical Assistant Professor of Health Science. As a recipient of the 1998 Faculty Achievement Award, Professor Werfel is also a member of the review boards for Pre-hospital and Disaster Medicine, and Pre-Hospital Immediate Care Magazines. He is an expert writer for the National Standard EMT-Intermediate/Paramedic Curriculum revision project, and, a founding Board of Directors Member of the National EMS Educator’s Association. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy from SUNY Empire State College and a Masters Degree in Health Policy and Management from Stony Brook University and is a frequent standard of care expert for litigation involving EMS practitioners and systems.

Frequently featured on videos and radio programs, Professor Werfel was a member of the editorial board for EMS World Magazine and for many years held the same position with JEMS magazine, authoring the “Ask the Educator” column on the JEMS web site as well as primary author for the “Case of the Month” column In JEMS magazine for seven years. A book “Clinical Clues”, based upon those columns was published and released by Mosby/Jems in February 2003. He lives in Port Jefferson New York with his wife and three children.

Paul will be presenting “Beyond the Obvious: Non-Arrhythmic Complications of MI" from 9a-10a. We are all aware that an acute myocardial infarction is the result of a dynamic process where a coronary artery is blocked by thrombus formation. We know that patients die as a direct result of the MI. But what about the patient that “recovers” from the MI but dies soon after? Are there non-ischemic and non-arrhythmic complications that can have fatal consequences to patients in the recovery period? You bet! Join author Paul Werfel as he discusses these complications in a stimulating and interactive program that will discuss the causes, incidence, demographics, signs and symptoms and prehospital treatment of Left ventricular aneurysm, Left ventricular free wall rupture, Acute ventricular septal defect, Acute mitral regurgitation, Right ventricular MI, Pericarditis in a detailed look.
