Windham Independent Letter to the Editor, Oct. 20, 2022: Only 4 Republicans on the District 17 ballot
Last week’s newspaper brought a rather unexpected letter to the editor from Alan Carpenter which needs to be addressed.
I respect him personally and respect his right to identify himself as a Republican, but Republicans who seek state office run as Republicans and go through the primary election to be on the general election ticket.
Mr. Carpenter chose to bypass the Republican primary election by running as an Independent, and his June 16th letter to the editor to the Windham Independent makes it clear why: “the only way for me to go to Concord and carry forward your voice in 2022 would be as an independent candidate”.
Skipping a tough contested primary and going directly to the general election is his prerogative, but one simply cannot have it both ways by running as an Independent while claiming to really be a Republican - he chose to leave the Republican Party, and we all need to respect this choice and stop referring to him as a Republican.
Also… given that his June 23 gun control letter to the editor sounds like it was written by Nancy Pelosi, I am not surprised that so many Windham residents consider him to be an Independent that is much closer to a Democrat than a Republican. That letter supports gun control in the form of waiting periods, age limits, red flag laws, mandatory training, storage laws, mental health restrictions and banning specific weapons, and makes it clear that he is open to other forms of anti firearm legislation.
Mr. Carpenter on Oct. 13: “ If you are willing to require a historically violent individual to wait a few days before acquiring their first handgun, you must not be a Republican”
Mr. Carpenter on June 23: “ Waiting Periods: To be clear, the person who can’t wait three, or even ten days to buy a handgun is exactly the person I do NOT want to buy a handgun today.”
The bold portions of his Oct. 13 statement are nowhere to be found in the detailed public position he took on June 23, when he made it crystal clear that nobody should be able to ever purchase a handgun without a waiting period, no matter whether they are squeaky clean or not, or whether this is their first handgun purchase or not. I will stick to just stating the facts rather than speculate as to why this significant inconsistency happened.
There are only 4 Windham Republicans on the November 8 District 17 ballot - I am asking for your support for the entire Republican ticket so we can keep protecting the New Hampshire Advantage.

Windham Independent Letter to the Editor, Sep. 29, 2022: Transparency and accountability
NH Constitution, Article 8 [Accountability of Magistrates and Officers; Public’s Right to Know]: “All power residing originally in, and being derived from, the people, all the magistrates and officers of government are their substitutes and agents, and at all times accountable to them. Government, therefore, should be open, accessible, accountable and responsive. To that end, the public’s right of access to governmental proceedings and records shall not be unreasonably restricted.”
I am quoting our state constitution above, but transparency and accountability are basic expectations of any government that understands they are serving the people, rather than ruling over them. Government employees work for us all, and we need to know what they are doing so we can hold them accountable - there cannot be accountability if transparency is lacking.
During my school board service, we made it easier for parents and residents to obtain information about how the schools were run. Every public information request was fulfilled quickly and completely. We explained the reasoning behind our votes, and engaged with the residents providing public input, so that everyone could understand our values and principles - transparency starts from the top, and if board members do not practice transparency themselves, it is hard to ask that of school district employees.
While serving as the Town Finance Director, we published quarterly and yearly financial reports that included every account of the town and a detailed analysis of the financial activity. My door was open for any resident that walked in the Bartley building and asked about financial information. No matter what the question was, everyone got immediate access to all the information that was publicly available - they would just sit with me behind my desk while we went through the records, support files, etc. As a result, everyone left my office with all the information they were looking for, gaining more trust in the town government in the process.
The last thing a government should do is vigorously defend themselves against public information requests. Delays in releasing information the public wants to know creates the appearance of a cover up… and we all know cover ups are often worse than the mistake they were designed to hide. Sooner or later, that information makes its way to the public - it is better to have a culture of transparency and openness that immediately provides access to what happened, so residents can have trust in their elected officials and government employees.
New Hampshire made a lot of progress towards transparency and accountability, but we still have room for improvement. If elected, I will push for more transparency and accountability for all levels of government - we have every right to know what our government is doing, so we can hold them accountable.

Windham Independent Letter to the Editor, Sep. 15, 2022: On to the general election!
I am truly grateful for all the support I received during the primary, which led to me becoming one of the four Republicans who will move on to the general election. It was a close race, with all 5 state representative candidates working hard and running clean campaigns - I have a lot of respect for their commitment to running for office and for the time and effort they put into their campaigns.
Before moving forward though, I must acknowledge how much I learned during the primary campaign. Having served for three years on the School Board and as the Town Finance Director for six and a half years (from December 2015 to June 2022), I already knew a lot about the town and its residents, but the many conversations I had while knocking on over 2,000 doors taught me so much more. I heard so many stories about the challenges our residents face, about their concerns for the way the state is run, about their hopes and dreams, about what they need from the state government to achieve their goals and so much more.
Those conversations (and the ones that will happen through November 8) are a big part of what drives me to run for office. We need legislators who understand that they are there to serve, not to rule over our lives because they don’t trust us to make our own decisions - that has always been and will always be my approach to public service.
New Hampshire is a great state to live in, but our freedom is under constant attack. We are also heading into tough economic times, so we cannot get complacent - we have to invest a lot of time and effort into making New Hampshire an even better place to live for our children and grandchildren.
The primary is in the rear view mirror - it is now time for us to start working together so we can win the state and federal seats we need to keep New Hampshire going in the right direction. I am excited about the general election campaign, the many great conversations, and the hard work ahead - let’s go!
You can always reach me at (603) 267 4142 or at [email protected]. I am grateful to all who supported me in the primary and will work hard to earn your vote on November 8.
