FREEZE WARNING: Ice + Trees = Hidden Hazards
As temperatures drop, ice can build up on branches and turn your trees into heavy, unpredictable loads. Even a thin layer of ice can add significant weight—especially on long limbs—leading to cracking, splitting, or sudden limb failure.
Why it’s dangerous
• Ice adds weight that can break branches without warning
• Limbs can fall onto cars, roofs, fences, and people
• Trees may lean or fail at the base if the ground is saturated and roots are stressed
• Damage is sometimes not obvious until the thaw—when weakened limbs finally drop
What you should do
• Stay clear of trees with heavy limbs over driveways, sidewalks, play areas, or roofs
• Don’t park under ice-loaded branches
• Avoid trying to remove ice by shaking limbs (it can cause breakage)
• After the freeze, check for hanging limbs, fresh cracks, or leaning
If you see a broken limb, a split trunk, or branches hanging over a home/driveway, message Simple Leaf Tree Care for a hazard assessment and safe removal.
Stay warm and stay safe.

Tree planting conditions can change wildly from site to site.
Some yards? You dig a clean hole, the soil is deep and workable, drainage is decent, and the tree has room to establish.
Other yards… you dig 6–10 inches and you hit rock bottom (literally). Like this one.
When you run into shallow soils, limestone, construction debris, or hardpan, it’s not just “harder digging”—it changes everything:
• Root growth is restricted, which can stunt the tree long-term
• Water behavior changes (it can pond, run off, or dry out fast depending on the layer)
• Trees can become less stable in high winds if roots can’t spread properly
• The “right tree” might be totally different for that spot
That’s why “planting a tree” isn’t one-size-fits-all. The best results come from matching the species + planting method + location to what the site will actually support.
If you’re planning new trees this season, Simple Leaf Tree Care can help you pick the right tree for your soil conditions—and avoid expensive do-overs.
