We received the news Toby’s legs will never get better. Some days he can walk better than others. Some days he’s literally dragging himself around after he takes a few steps. We suspect he may end up in a wheelchair. Unfortunately even his front legs are messed up honestly he doesn’t let anything get him down.

How did this happen? Whoever had him that left him to die outside of a Georgia shelter. Let the malnutrition go on for so long that his body ate whatever viable sources of energy was there to keep his little body going. On top of the parasites taking any nutrients on top of that. His body ate what little muscle he had to survive. We’ve had him for 2 weeks now. We should be seeing some improvements unfortunately that’s not the case. He’s already gained 2lbs since we took him in.

Toby is a special pup that still fights everyday. We still owe thousands on emergency medical expenses from saving his life. Plus the heartworm treatment we’re currently doing on Loki, and all the other expenses we incur to keep the rescue running. The rescue doesn’t run for free and the vets expect to be paid in a timely manner so do the credit card companies. We come begging again to help us get caught up on our bills.

🚨 URGENT: We Need Your Help to Save Lives 🚨

This is the heartbreaking reality of treating a heartworm-positive dog.

Loki is only 1 year old, and the invoice shown is just for his first heartworm injection. He still has two more injections, months of restricted activity, follow-up care, and additional medication ahead of him. As he continues to gain weight, he’ll require higher doses of medication to eliminate the heartworms.

The hardest part? All of this could have been prevented with a monthly heartworm preventative that costs about $12–$15 a month for a dog his size. Instead, we’re now facing more than $3,000 in treatment costs so Loki can have the long, healthy life he deserves.

Loki is our second heartworm-positive dog in just a few months, after taking in Hopper. We are often the rescue that gets the call for the dogs no one else will take—the severe medical cases, the behavioral cases, and the dogs considered “unadoptable.” We say yes because every dog deserves a second chance.

Right now, our rescue account has just $115.

We’re also still trying to pay off Toby’s emergency medical bill of over $4,000 from last week. We believe every dog deserves quality medical care, but when donations don’t come in, the bills fall on us. Our credit cards are now maxed out.

The truth is, we cannot continue saving lives without your help.

This year has brought more medical emergencies than ever before, and we’ve been stretched beyond our limits. We promise to be transparent—every dollar donated goes directly toward the care of the dogs who need us most.

If you’re able, please consider making a donation today. No amount is too small, and every contribution helps us continue saying “yes” to dogs like Loki.
